Education Q&A

Texas distance education ?

ECept Education > Distance Education

Q. I am also a Texas resident looking for distance education here at home. I am a 50 year old woman who wants to finally get her education after having put three children through college. My problem is the TASP test. I don't want to have to waste three semesters learning algebra again to pass that test, to get a degree in journalism. Does anyone know an address to write to find out about DE opportunities in Texas?

A. If you're going to be studying at home why are you so concerned that the program be offered in the state of Texas? have found listed have additional charges for "out-of-state" students. Some of these charges are three times the in state charge. I have noted a tendency for the difference to be getting smaller. I belive that when I first heard of the program at Thomas Edison they had higher charges for all items not just an additional $385 or so for additional annual enrollment fee. As far as DE degrees go, I haven't been paying attention; my choices have settled on Regents College or an in-state semi-residential program (plus Regents Credit Bank). Regents charges the same regardless of residency. (today's odd discovery: even distance students enrolling at Charter Oak State College in Connecticut apparently must provide proof of measles and rubella vaccinations in order to enroll - it's a state law) For courses via correspondence, many universities I've checked out do NOT have additional charges for out-of-state students. Huge exceptions include the University of Florida ($220/semester hour) and Indiana State University ($284.50/semester hour) for non-residents (!!!). Interesting area for a little study or two... It would make sense that such fees would eventually level, especially in the boundaryless world of distance education. It is interesting to note that the church-run Regis University, in their BA program through the Mind Extension University intermediary service at least, charges a modestly ~higher~ rate for residents of their home state of Colorado. The only way I could think to explain this was if they wanted an small incentive for them to take the residential program instead. In this era of "fiscal responsibility," however, we shouldn't be surprised to see more of the $15 transcript school of fee schedule writing, and out- of-state tuition increases are apparently not the hardest things to sell politically.
