SafestWay driving school vs. MeECept Education > Driver Education Q. I signed my soon-to-be 16 year old daughter for driving lessons at Safest Way, the local driving school. We signed up for the 3 required lessons for her to get her license. She completed the first two lessons. Her third lesson was on a late Monday afternoon. She found out the Saturday before that a program in school she is involved in changed its meeting time to Monday afternoon. So we had to change the driving appointment. OK. The literature from the driving school said you must give them 24 hours notice to change an appointment or they will charge you for an additional hour. However, they are closed on Saturday, so I figured I would leave a message on their answering machine. Low and behold, their machine doesn't take messages, it just gives the office hours. OK. So I decided to write a note and drop it in their mailslot. I drove over there and dropped it in what looked like a normal mail box. When I called the office on Monday morning, the person who answered the phone said that to change a Monday appt you must let them know by Friday at 5pm! Furthermore, the "mailbox" I dropped the note in was not for mail delivery, rather, it was for them to leave information for their driving instructors over the weekend and evenings, so they never got the note. Needless to say, I'm am fighting this - starting with the Better Business Bureau, and possibly small claims court. I've tried to reach the office manager (who only works a couple of days a week), and gotten no return call to date. How can they say they need 24 hours notice, and then not provide a means to give it over the weekend? Am I out of line here? Suggestions? A. No, but I think you lose on this one, anyway. Granted, the school didn't say "1 working day in advance", which is what they really mean. What's probably happening is that they have independent contractors as driving instructors, not full-time employees, and the contractors get so much per hour whether or not the student shows up. If you don't give them enough notice so they can notify the contractor, they pass along their cost to you. Only seems fair to me. This is just an educated opinion though; there's enough bizness-is-evil sentiment in this group that I'm sure you'll get other people to agree with you
