what can i do for Supervisor Training ?ECept Education > Supervisor Training Q. what can i do for Supervisor Training ? Here at Fogler Library, we have started a Support Staff Supervisors group, made up of non-librarians who supervise other staff and students. We meet monthly and are planning some training for ourselves and hope to eventually include training sessions for other staff as well. A. -For the past five years we have had a number of standing committees in the library. Our committees are a mix of professional and classified staff; everyone is on at least one committee. Committee membership is first decided by voluntarism and then by administrative decree. Human Resources is a popular committee. The campus staff training coordinator is on the committee at our request. During the past year this group organized or sponsored workshops (1 hour to 1/2 day depending on the speaker) on grant writing, resume and career development, correct book handling techniques, campus and office safety, etc. Our student employees are always invited to the workshops and attendance is paid. You may be interested that in Circ. we have recently expanded our whole staff semester meetings to monthly meetings. We meet early on Staurday morning before the building opens and supervisors provide milk and donuts. The agenda includes information updates, skill training or polishing on at least one task we all perform, and lots of Q & A from the students. One of their recent suggestions was to give new employees and second tour of the library 2-3 months after they are on the job. We did this and directional and informational assistance improved immediately. -Subject: Supervisor Training Here at Dalhousie, we have the same type of thing set up. We meet irregularly to discuss supervisory related issues. We also get together to decide on workshops for ourselves as well as our staff. Things like absenteeism, counselling skills, supervisory skills. We also bring in speakers on specific issues like serving patrons with disabilities, patrons whose first language is not English, etc.
