Education Q&A

University Of Maryland Dental School, Dental Schools

ECept Education > Online Degree

Q. I'm a Junior at Lehigh University (doing well), and I'm applying to dental soon, rather shortly. I've already taken my DAT's and did well on those also. So far I'll be applying to: University Of Connecticut University of Maryland at Baltimore Boston University Medical Center Harvard School of Dental Medicine Tufts University Creighton University University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Columbia University New York University State University of New York at Buffalo State University of New York at Stony Brook Case Western Reserve University University of Pennsylvania University of Pittsburgh Temple University Does anyone have any other suggestions of where to apply? (My homestate is New York and Lehigh is in PA). As well, can someone rank these schools and create a top five list of US dental schools?

A. I have just a few suggestions for you; find out what the graduation record is at the school (what % of seniors graduate on time- expected date), what the board passing rate is (both state and national boards) and if the school has an ample amount of patients. the latter i feel is the most important; most everyone at our school (Northwestern) is struggling to get patients to work with which is directly related to a timely graduation! Do not base your decision on the ranking of the school. These rankings are meaningless. You would get a good education in any of these dental schools. What you should look for are these: 1-Location of the school.( Safe area or not) 2-Location again regarding availability of patients(so you can graduate) 3-Location again, this time you have to consider that you might stay there after graduation weather you want it or not( available jobs, marriage, etc, might force you to stay in that area) 4-Location: can you put up with the weather for atleast four years 5- Make sure the school is affordable. You could end up anywhere from 50k to 200k in loans. Make sure you choose the school wisely. Once you start, it's very difficult(almost impossible) to transfer. You see, I made the same mistake of looking at rankings. And now I am stuck here due to both marriage and job security. i see plenty of good advice here! location, location, location!...while it may not be very appealling, some of the schools in the lower income areas have the greatest number of patients and as everyone knows, getting out on time depends on getting requirements done! when i went to school i picked the one i could afford to go to...it left me wit less debt than say, my friends who went to nyu or penn, and owe over 100k... this is not a get rich profession ( you can do ok) but the more debt you have the harder it is to make a living( I support many banks, student loan companies, dental suppliers, etc).
